What's the difference with RuneAudio ?

Postby jpbaril » Mon Jan 13 2014 23:06

Hi,
I just received a new Raspberry Pi on which I was planning on installing Raspyfi, but realized it had forked in two projects (Volumio and RuneAudio).
Could you tell me what are the differences between these two projects so I can know which one fits best my needs?
I mean, if TsunAmp never saw the light is probably because some developers wanted to bring it to different directions, which I suppose each respective project now followed. So, if it's easier than saying what are all the differences between the two, what are those two directions each project followed?

BTW, I asked the same question on RuneAudio forum but did not receive a clear answer.

Thank you for your answer and for this project.

Hi and welcome Jpbarll!
To reply, from what I know, these are the main differences:
Volumio is built on Debian while Rune is built on ArchLinux. I prefer debian, it has a stronger userbase and proves to be more stable.
Volumio's webui is a refined version of RaspyFi's one. The difference (from what I'm aware) is that on Volumio's you have output selection (USB, HDMI, analog, I2S) , NAS handling, Wi-fi Handling, i2s output selectable (Hifiberry, R-pi DAC, Rasp12SPlay3), USB library storage support and WebRadios and other minor under the hood improvements. From what I know rune just works with NAS as of now, and doesn't have the above capabilities.
With Volumio I want to make the system the more complete I can, while mantaining it simple to use, and good sounding. I'm currently developing Spotify and Soundcloud integration, upnp and Dlna capability, and synced multi-room audio. Think you're not interested in other platforms, but Volumio is avaiable also for Cubox, Udoo, BBB. And Compulab Utilite, Cubietruck X2 and X3 and Odroid are coming soon.
System wide, Volumio features out of the box I2S DAC support (works with Beta1, beta 1.1 broke this but going to release new version soon), and multiroom and specifically built android app sound@home.
Hope I did reply your question, helping you better understand. If you want to know some more specific points, let me know!

As of the projects fork, I must admit that I was a bit deluded by how they behaved. Tsunamp was about to be launched in days, and I would have never expected what happened then. Especially from people you worked side by side for months...
But this happens in life, so it's not a problem. The good thing of open source is that everybody can contribute with their effort. And in the end of the day, audiophiles on a budget now have a wider choice.

I really think the community around a project is the first feature of such things, so I'm glad that Volumio's response was that good. And hope the Volumio's community will grow even more. This project (like RaspyFi) would never be what it is without its users, I think that only together we can make this better, what we really need it to be!
;)

How did you implement this feature? Is there any documentation for this? Any links probably? TIA

Do I need e.g a Smartphone necessarily? I would prefer a webbrowser...

Thank you for your response.

Yes I just bought a raspberry pi, but had known it before, I would have bought a Cubox-i for its s/pdif connection.

I'm also mostly interested in synced multi-room. I would like it to be controlled also from the webui, not only from the Android app.

In that setup I would use the raspberry and cubox-i as receivers, but I would like to use my linux x86 computer or arm NAS as the main server. Do you know if that will be possible in the future?

Don't worry, the PI was a good, energy saving choice.
For s/pdif just add this to the PI: http://www.hifiberry.com/hbdigi .

What's the difference with RuneAudio ?

Postby Tinitus » Tue Nov 18 2014 22:18

Hi,

just saw that it was planned to develop Volumio for Odroid. There is XU3 Lite coming out which I would prefer to any of the boards currently available for Volumio. Any chance there will be a Volumio version for the Odroid XU Lite available in the near future?

Best Regards
