Internet Radio Stations in Volumio

There is a nice list of Internet radio stations included in the Volumio image, but some of them didn’t work (old data streams), so I started a new collection. When available, I use European streaming servers.

You can download the playlists here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uvoj146f907f1f4/dssh0hfZRs
Add them to folder /var/lib/mpd/music/WEBRADIO
I’ll update the list occasionally. If you want to add stations or have any suggestions for improvement, just comment.

All radio streams are 320kbps mp3 or 128kbps AAC+, unless otherwise stated in the filename. As Volumio can produce audiophile quality, I think bitrates less than that is a waste.

Disclaimer 1: I have no idea why I get two files in Dropbox, one “_.xxx.pls” file in addition to the “.pls” file.

Disclaimer 2: personally I hate when people start new threads on topics that already have threads, but I really couldn’t find a clean Internet Radio Stations thread.

Hi,
if you copy the .pls files from an mac you will get so called “htaccess” files which loo like “._filename.pls”.
These files contain window position,last showed line,etc.

To get rid of these i used the following tool on my macbook:

macupdate.com/app/mac/19044 … -mac-disks

You just mount the directory on your mac and then start the tool.
Beeing asked by the tool which drive to clean you choose “Webradio” and you are done.

Tnx for the tip!

Thanks for this - Is there a specific syntax/format that is used to create these pls files or these are just the files you get off the net ( all accumulated in one place ) ?

The reason I ask is, some of the pls files i tried to use with volumio do not seem to work unless you edited the syntax a bit.

Thanks for the effort - great collection :sunglasses:

Playlists “.pls” files contain information about a list of music files, or the URL of a streaming server.

[playlist]
header
File1=http://xxx.yyy.zzz:port
The URL of stream. “port” is optional. For example File1=http://http-live.sr.se/srklassiskt-mp3-192 or http://50.7.173.162:8014
Title1=station name
Defines track title. For example Title1=Swedish Radio Classic. This title appears in the player while playing the stream.
Length1=-1
Length in seconds of track. Value of -1 indicates indefinite (streaming).
Numberofentries=1
This variable indicates the number of tracks. Streaming is always one track at a time.
Version=2
Playlist version. Type “Version=2” to designate the file as a Version 2 PLS file. Currently only a value of 2 is valid.

For more info check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLS_(file_format)

Usually you can just download the pls-files from the radio stations. I use pls because I’m used to the format and all radio stations I’ve come across use it.

The most common streaming music formats are Playlists (pls), Microsoft Advanced Stream Redirector (asx), RealPlayer (ram), Ogg Vorbis (ogg) and streaming mp3 (m3u).

I updated and cleaned the radio station list in Dropbox. Internet radio stations sometimes have a short expiration date and the bandwidth is often less than required. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media#Streaming_bandwidth_and_storage

Great work, thank You very much !

Thank you for your work and the explanation, where to copy the .pls files.

Have you been able to do “Radio Capital Classic rock” out of Italy? (capital.it/capital/webradio/capital-classic-rock).

Hello,

If yoy need radio stations, you can also install Cantata for Windows. Cantata is ment as a GUI with MPD on PC. But you can use this beatifull program to connect to Volume MPD as an GUI/Player. The nice thing that it has a complete list of radio stations (11 portals), enough I assume.

This beside the fantastic Volumio WebGUI and all the Apps for Ipad and Android. I love BubbleUPnP (Android) to control all my devices and Nas. For Ipad there is f.i. PlugPlayer.

Harold

Thank you jansandred for the great playlist and advice on how to format them. I am finally listening to Radio Paradise at high bitrate - excellent!

Hello, I converted an *.asx file to .pls (manually) following the pls format that contains streams to BBC Radio 1 which points to mms://bbcradio.co.uk…. When i start playing the stream it works but it is choppy at the start. I noticed when i viewed the screen via HDMI that everytime it writes the line “setting stream to 0” there is a short pause. Any tips or solutions to resolve this? I tried both wired and wireless so its not a speed issue at the network layer.

Is it because I set the following to “32” and it should be “1”? numberofentries=32

Garrett

There is a bunch of great stations called SomaFm. (somafm.com)

Sorry for the stupid question but… How can I add those *.pls to the specified folder?
I’m using windows and not be able to see de folder’s structure of the Volumio image using Daemon tools or similar, or on the installed image on SD card with a card reader…

try exploring your Network

you should find something called volumio in explorerer when clicking to Network

if you click on it there should be 4 Folders

1 of them is called Webradio Stations (or somethign like that)

in this Folder you can find all the *.pls files

adding a *.pls file and doin a database update on volumios web Interface lists the added Radio stations under “Webradio” when you click browse (bottomleft) in the webgui

I updated the files in the Dropbox folder. Fixed some broken links.

Hello everyone,
I can’t get this link to work…

Radio Deejay:
mp3.kataweb.it:8000/RadioDeejay

All the others I added are working perfectly.

it makes a continuos dirty noise and that’s all.
Are you able to play it in your Volumio?
Is it a MPC problem? But then why only this link?
